The Reduction Pots

We use metal containers
with lids for the Raku reduction process.

It's called reduction
because you "reduce" the amount of oxygen in the air/atmosphere around your Raku pottery pieces.

When you reduce the amount of oxygen, the glaze forms an iridiscent sheen, which wouldn't happen if there were enough oxygen.

Anything that burns can be put in the reduction pots. For this firing, we used hay,
wood shavings, and some feathers. Other popular 'burnables' include shredded newspaper, horse-hair, pine needles, and sawdust.

A tight fitting lid is important.
